Dunsborough Slayers V GMAS Cyclones

Despite a heavy downpour earlier in the day conditions were pretty much ideal when the Slayers kicked off against the Cyclones. The Slayers were tasked before play began to remember to maintain good spacing and play the ball deliberately.

In the first half Donaiya was in goals having arrived just in time from a ballet exam. Her instructions were to be positive and assertive any time the ball came near. As the half wore on it was clear she had listened well. Many times she went at the attacker, even leaving her area to clear the ball. What really inspired her team-mates was seeing her take the ball out of the area herself to gain some distance before laying balls off to team-mates in space in the mid-field.

The GMAS players were not denied entirely and there were some quality strikes that got past defenders and keeper alike but the intent of the girls was fantastic. Phoebe, Megan, Ella and Indiah performed very well in defence. It’s great to see more and more deliberate play out of defence – Phoebe running the ball out of defence bodes well for her development and our teams in the future. The overall toughness cannot be questioned.

Sabrina & Saphyr created some good chances breaking through mid-field but were denied by quick defending or wayward shots. Sophia, Tayla and Mia were also in the action up front. In the midst of dynamic tussle just in front of the GMAS goal the ball got knocked in front of Sabrina about 12m out from goal. She controlled it with a good touch and then drove through the ball to notch up her 2nd goal for the season.

A few players from the GMAS team were at times waiting well up field for the ball to be passed to them. I appreciate their coach walking up the touch line to remind them of the offside principle. It’s not about winning or losing but rather to help the players learn for when offside will be called. Thanks again to Andrew – coach of GMAS Cyclones.

Ella took the keeper duties in the second half. At times the Slayers struggled to get the ball out of the defensive area as the Cyclones jumped on many goal kicks. Once the ball did get out to the mid-field the Slayers often got the ball into space and the speed of Sabrina, Saphyr & Phoebe was a real asset. Donaiya, back in her preferred place on the left of mid-field made some incisive runs and delivered some perfectly weighted balls in front of Saphyr. Unfortunately Saphyr was unable to convert though there were a few nice strikes on goal.

This really was an exciting game with many scoring opportunities for the Slayers. The parents were treated to some excellent play and really everyone stepped up.

For demonstrating resolute toughness in defence and maintaining intensity Megan was our SLAYERS TIARA winner for the day!!
