GMAS 2 v Busselton Lions 0
GMAS Power Rangers faced off with Busselton Lions for the semi final of the knockout competition in the under 13’s at Barnard Central in atrocious conditions on Saturday. Having switched to the later unfamiliar midday timeslot both teams warmed up as best they could. GMAS won the toss and captain Angus Jackson kicked with the howling southerly in the first half.
The ball was hard to control as the wind swung to the corner and crosses were going harmlessly long. Busselton defended stoutly and had a close shot of their own from a downfield break. Both teams were being stalled by a large puddle in the centre circle and flowing play was difficult. GMAS looked to have wasted the wind advantage at half time when the scores were locked 0-0.
Forced to abandon the aerial route GMAS kept the ball at foot and after some great lead-up work from William Jackson to outflank the defence Lilly Henley put the Power Rangers in front with a strong shot in the box. Busselton countered strongly and GMAS struggled to clear from their half in the windy conditions. Angus Jackson played a defensive sweeper role to perfection while the backs of Taylah Burles, Corey Weir, Brody Aylers and Mia Jones repelled the stream of Lions attack. Strong saves from Kody Stott and a miss over the crossbar kept the lead intact before George Davies scored the sealer after weaving through the defence with 5 to go. At 2-0 the game and a spot in the final fell to GMAS in a hard fought encounter.
